How Do You Place Your Baby into a Car Seat Properly?
So, you have properly installed a baby car seat for your toddler, but you are not exactly sure how you can properly put them on it. Well, that is actually quite a common experience, especially for first-time parents. In fact, 3 out of 5 parents do not even know where to begin.
Well, fortunately for you, I happen to have all of the information that you need to help you place your baby into a car seat properly.
Do keep in mind that when you are in the process of doing so, there is a chance that they will cry. But, that is actually okay. This can also happen when you’re changing baby diapers, but again, this is a normal thing and you shouldn’t worry about it too much.
Is the Car Seat Right for Them?
The first thing that you need to make sure is that the car seat should fit your baby perfectly. That means that the shoulder straps should be able to lock in place without putting too much strain on your toddler.
Also, it has to be as comfortable as possible. Perhaps, having a little bit of cushioning can help make your baby relax while they’re on it.
The important thing that you have to remember here is that the securing straps should be tight enough for them to be on place, but also a little bit lenient in that it doesn’t put untoward pressure on your baby.
When your baby is still relatively small (about 1-3 months old), they tend to have weaker muscles which means that they still cannot support their own heads. That is why you have to position them in such a way that their head only moves sideways and not forward. So, how do you make sure that it does that? Well, here are some tips:
- The shoulder straps should be tightly snug on their bodies. This will help prevent your toddle from slumping or falling over.
- The car seat should be reclined a little bit in such a way that the angle of the car seat is put in a position where your baby’s head stays in place and will not go sideways or move forward. Parents should be extra careful to place their baby’s head into the seat nicely so that their head won’t have to move that much.
Do Not Use Any Jackets
It is understandable that you want to cover the baby, especially if the weather is extreme outside. However, allowing them to wear a jacket while you’re putting them in a car seat can actually be detrimental and may pose a danger to your toddler.
Instead of having them wear a jacket, you can instead place your baby into the car seat and then just put a blanket over them.
Don’t Forget the Entertainment
If your baby is going to be on a long ride, you have to make sure that you do not skimp on the entertainment. You can either play some kiddie tunes or have them watch their favorite shows.
